What our middle mile fiber engineering services cover

Draftech delivers middle mile fiber engineering services for carriers, regional and rural ISPs, and electric cooperatives entering broadband. We engineer the corridor from its origination at a carrier hotel, internet exchange point or data center to each last-mile or campus termination point. The assignment includes high-level design, low-level design, route-diversity design where justified, and the permit and documentation packages for that regional segment.

A last-mile design can advance while its backbone connection remains an assumption. The project reaches a review milestone, needs a confirmed handoff, and discovers that nobody owns the engineering between the serving network and the proposed endpoint. Now the schedule depends on a segment with no allowance for detailed design, permit review or documentation.

Our engineering is 100% in-house. We develop the middle-mile segment alongside the last-mile or campus design, with a single point of accountability for the route and its deliverables. Within our data center fiber engineering services, this regional middle-mile fiber engineering covers the backbone route that the last-mile or campus project needs to move forward.

Scope limits before detailed design

For a rural ISP's service area or a data center campus, we start by reviewing your plan and the backbone gap behind it. That review establishes the origination point, every termination point, the selected corridor and the design information already available. It also identifies decisions still needed from your team, so an unresolved endpoint does not quietly become a fixed assumption in the drawings.

This service begins once a route has been selected. If that decision is still open, our route feasibility and alternatives study provides the earlier engineering stage. Once the route is confirmed, we carry it into HLD and LLD with its endpoints and outstanding inputs documented.

Longer-distance, carrier- and hyperscaler-scale backbone routes belong with our long-haul fiber engineering services. Work within a single campus belongs with our hyperscale campus fiber engineering services. This regional assignment reaches the agreed campus termination point, where the campus scope takes over.

HLD and LLD for the backbone segment

Draftech's middle mile HLD design services establish the engineering basis for the selected regional backbone. The HLD shows the alignment from origination to each termination, planned aerial and underground spans, proposed splice points, crossings, and pole attachment and make-ready needs along the route. Your team can review the whole segment before detailed drawings advance independently.

We develop the LLD from that accepted basis. Detailed LLD route sheets and schedules identify aerial and underground placement by span, splice point and splice closure locations, slack storage, handhole and vault placement, pole attachments, make-ready needs and crossing details. The package carries the HLD decisions into construction drawings for the backbone segment, from the handoff at the carrier hotel or internet exchange point to the agreed last-mile or campus endpoint.

The LLD is drawn from current field conditions along the backbone. Where existing records do not show current pole, span or underground conditions along the selected route, our field survey team collects them before the LLD sheets are drawn. On aerial portions, the poles the backbone will occupy go through pole loading analysis before the attachment design is final, so the make-ready needs in the schedules reflect the structures actually in the field.

Our middle-mile deliverables include:

  • Route and corridor engineering from the agreed origination point to each termination point.
  • Backbone HLD for the selected alignment, reviewed with your team before detailed design.
  • Backbone LLD construction drawings and schedules for the full segment.
  • Route-diversity design where the service requirements justify separate regional paths.
  • Crossing and right-of-way permit packages coordinated with the selected route.
  • Route, design and cost-basis exhibits for the middle-mile portion of a grant application, where included in scope.

The review follows the backbone route across the package. If a termination changes, we check the affected backbone sections and their supporting documents. If a corridor adjustment affects a shared section, we identify every downstream termination involved.

Route diversity for the backbone

Route diversity belongs in the scope when the connection's service requirements justify it. We establish those requirements with your team and carry them into the regional backbone design. The engineering traces both paths across the region and identifies any common bridge or highway crossing, shared pole line, or shared conduit or structure that could put both paths at risk.

The package records the diversity basis and any unresolved constraints so your team can make an informed acceptance decision. For a carrier or a cooperative's last-mile build, we scope this work around the backbone's service requirements, rather than applying a blanket diversity claim to every middle-mile assignment.

Permit coordination on the backbone route

A regional corridor can involve several crossing and right-of-way approvals. Those approvals belong in the engineering schedule from the beginning. Draftech coordinates the crossing and right-of-way permits touched by the selected alignment as part of the middle-mile delivery scope.

Permit drawings and review responses accompany the backbone design. Your team can see which crossings and right-of-way approvals remain open, the comments awaiting a response, and the documentation needed for each submission.

We track submissions, open comments and documentation needs until the route is ready for construction. We report submitted and approved status separately so your team can sequence the regional segment against the last-mile or campus work without treating an outstanding approval as complete.

Engineering exhibits tied to the middle-mile design

For grant-supported projects, Draftech prepares the engineering exhibits for the middle-mile portion: the route, its design basis and the cost basis associated with that scope. These exhibits describe the same segment carried through engineering, including its origination and termination limits.

BEAD subgrantees can connect this assignment with our BEAD broadband engineering services. For ReConnect and other non-BEAD programs, our federal grant engineering services handle the application itself.

Backbone deliverables and project milestones

At kickoff, we establish when the last-mile or campus team needs the backbone design decisions. We then organize the backbone deliverables around those dependencies: confirmation of the segment limits, HLD review, detailed design, permit submissions and the documentation needed for release.

Common Questions

Middle Mile Fiber Engineering Services FAQ

Can you engineer the middle-mile segment while our last-mile design is underway?

+

Yes. We review the current last-mile plan, identify the backbone route it depends on and develop the backbone package alongside it. We coordinate the design milestones so the last-mile team receives the handoff decisions it needs as its own work advances.

What if we already have a backbone HLD?

+

We review the existing HLD against the selected corridor, origination point and required terminations. That review identifies unresolved assumptions and the work needed to carry the segment into LLD. The resulting scope reflects the condition of the existing package.

Can one assignment cover several last-mile termination points?

+

Yes. We engineer the regional route to each agreed termination and document the shared sections that connect them. Changes to a common section are checked against all affected service areas, keeping the individual termination packages consistent with the backbone.

Can Draftech also build the backbone?

+

Yes. Draftech also offers full turnkey construction delivered by Draftech-managed crews. If you use your own contractor, the backbone LLD and permit package are issued as that contractor's construction basis.

What should we send to scope the work?

+

Send the selected route, the current last-mile or campus plan, proposed origination and termination points, and any existing engineering or permit correspondence. Include the milestones that depend on the backbone. We review those inputs to define the middle-mile deliverables and identify decisions needed before detailed design proceeds.
